Nobody is an action-packed, first person shooter with a twist. The game features four playable characters, each with their own unique skills and powers. It’s up to the player to decide which character they want to play as and how they want them to work together.
Nobody is a new action-adventure film starring Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Kevin Hart. The film was released in theaters on July 13th, 2024.

Even Marvel has built a bit of an empire by casting comedians as their heroes, with Paul Rudd and Kumail Nanjiani, to name a few. From Owen Wilson in Behind Enemy Lines to Michael Cena being handy with a katana in Scott Pilgrim vs The World, even Marvel has built a bit of an empire by casting comedians as their heroes.
It’s possible to argue that comedians were the first true action stars of film. Silent film icons like Buster Keaton attempting to escape a train in The General or Harold Lloyd clinging to life in Safety Last! I suppose both genres require a degree of physicality from their performers that other genres do not.
So, with his part in Nobody, we can now add Bob Odenkirk to this illustrious cinematic pedigree. He not only excels in action scenes, but he has also established himself as an iconic action hero on par with John Wick and Jason Bourne. Nobody has the potential to become my new favorite action hero.

Hutch “Nobody” Mansell, played by Bob Odenkirk, is a mild-mannered middle-aged family guy coasting through his apparently mundane existence. After an unsuccessful burglary attempt, he and his family are left traumatized. Something in Hutch wakes that he believed was buried. On a bus, I had a fortuitous meeting with three intoxicated Russian goons. Hutch is finally swayed back to his old habits.
Nobody is exactly the kind of action concept I like. Everyone looks down on the humble protagonist, yet he’s really a badass assassin. It’s a whole desire come true. For action movies, casting against type has always worked. It adds to the stakes that are required. Don’t get me wrong: I admire the Arnies, Slys, and JCDVs of the world. They’re the reason I initially became interested in action movies. However, there’s a part of me that believes in the action a little bit more when it’s someone you can relate to. And Odenkirk does an excellent job of emphasizing the character’s plight. Everyman bursting at the seams, looking for an excuse to revert to his old habits.
When I saw the promos for Nobody, I believe the primary attraction was that it seemed new since we hadn’t seen Bob Odenkirk do anything like this before. I can now imagine how viewers felt when they watched Bruce Willis in Die Hard for the first time in 1988. Odenkirk is also accompanied by a fantastic ensemble. Connie Nielsen may portray the stereotypical wife role we’ve all seen a thousand times before, but she gives the picture emotional weight.
Hutch’s retired FBI father is played by Christopher Lloyd. Let’s just say he knows his way around a shotgun, or rather, shotguns. Hutch has a strange buddy named Rza. Later in the film, a lot will be revealed about him. He also knows how to use a sniper rifle. I need to speak about Yulian, the primary antagonist. Who would rather spend his evenings blowing, singing, and dancing than managing Russian mafia cash? Russians may be standard action movie villain fare, but Aleksey Serebryakov brings such charm to the role that it seems new.
Which brings us to the moment at Yulian’s nightclub where Nobody eventually confronts Yulian. It’s not just one of the most badass moments of the year, but also one of the most badass scenes of all time. To avoid spoilers, all I’m saying is don’t bring firearms to a claymore mine battle.

BOB ODENKIRK HAS REALLY GOOD PUNCHING POWER.

We must discuss the action in this picture. You’d expect nothing less from the creators of John Wick and Atomic Blonde, 87eleven. They’ve perfected the art of crafting well-crafted action scenes on costs that are comparable to most movie catering budgets. It has a lot of action scenes for a movie that cost $16 million to produce.
Ilya Naishuller, the filmmaker, deserves praise for keeping the action gritty. Building on the raw and ready performance of the underappreciated Hardcore Henry. Broken bones, shattered teeth, and every punch leave a mark define Naishuller. The action never reaches the ugliness of The Raid. Every combat scene has a comic aspect to it. Hutch absorbs just as many blows as he throws. Our hero’s confrontation with a gang of intoxicated Russian heavies on the bus can only be characterized as painful! Hutch is a bruiser to the max. He’s also a strategic thinker. From fire exguisters to bus handrails, he uses everything he can to dispatch his foes. During the climax, he even acts a little like Home Alone.
Nobody’s John Wick shadows don’t end with 87eleven’s production. Derek Kolstad, a screenwriter, also wrote the script. He contributes his trademark world-building to the picture. Nobody is part of a larger universe that is only hinted at in the film. Kolstad adds a layer of mythology to the narrative that is reminiscent of comic books. Hutch isn’t satisfied with being the ordinary assassin for the intelligence services; he’s also known as a “Auditor.” His employer is referred to as “The Barber.” These hyper-realistic details enhance the picture.

There isn’t a film that they don’t create anymore. You know, the kind of low-budget action film that used to be a Hollywood mainstay. The type that we used to get in the 1980s and 1990s. The ones that didn’t have to be a $200 million, end-of-the-world special effects extravaganza. The stakes were sometimes lower and more personal. I sort of hope 87eleven/87North Productions would simply take over as the Blumhouse of action movies.
Nobody could possibly have lit the globe on fire at the box office in April (it did ok numbers). But neither did John Wick in 2014, and look where we are today, with a fourth film in the works. I may be a little ahead of my time, but Nobody is destined to be an action classic in years to come.
It’s a fantastic action film that will keep you engrossed for 90 minutes. As Hutch “Nobody” Mansell, a new action hero in the making, Odenkirk is fantastic. I’d want to see more films in which he plays this role. I just hope we don’t have to wait too long for a sequel from Universal. If they do, it should be called The Nobodies.
